Definitions
Cookies are small text fragments (letters and/or numbers) that allow the web server to store information on the client (browser) to be reused during the same visit to the website (session cookies) or later, even after several days (persistent cookies). Cookies are stored, according to the user's preferences, by the individual browser on the specific device used (computer, tablet, smartphone).
Cookies and Their Functions
Depending on their specific purposes, different types of cookies are used. Below is a list of the most common types of cookies and the purposes for which they are used.
Session Cookies
Session cookies are temporarily stored in the computer's memory while visiting a website, for example, to keep track of the selected language. Session cookies remain stored on the computer for a short period of time and are deleted as soon as the user closes the web browser.
Persistent or Tracking Cookies
Persistent cookies save a file on the computer for a long period of time. This type of cookie has an expiration date. Persistent cookies allow websites to remember user information and settings during subsequent visits, making navigation more practical and faster, since login is no longer necessary. When the expiration date is reached, the cookie is automatically deleted the next time the website that created it is accessed.
First-Party Cookies (Our Cookies)
These cookies are set by the websites themselves (with a domain identical to that shown in the browser's address bar) and can only be read by those sites. They are commonly used to store information such as user preferences to be used during subsequent visits to the site.
Third-Party Cookies
These cookies are set by domains other than the one indicated in the browser’s address bar, meaning by organizations that do not correspond to the website owners. Cookies used, for example, to collect information for advertising and content personalization purposes or to generate web statistics may be “third-party cookies.” Third-party cookies allow more comprehensive surveys of users’ browsing habits and are considered more sensitive from a privacy standpoint. For this reason, most web browsers allow users to modify settings to prevent such cookies from being accepted. The user can decide whether or not to accept cookies by adjusting their browser settings. Disabling “third-party cookies” may affect site navigation. Settings can be defined specifically for different websites and web applications. Moreover, the best browsers allow you to define different settings for “first-party” and “third-party” cookies. For example, in Firefox, through the Tools → Options → Privacy menu, it is possible to access a control panel where you can define whether or not to accept different types of cookies and proceed with their removal.
